Understanding Color
All puppies get one gene from mom and one gene from dad for each allele, and like people, certain genes
are dominant, certain are recessive.
Blue - Blue (also called gray) is a dilute of black.
In order for a dog to physically be blue they must carry two copies of the dilute gene "d". This will dna as dd. A dog that carries the dilute gene will have received one copy from mom or dad and will dna as Dd. A black dog that does not carry the blue dilute gene will dna as DD. A dog cannot throw a gene it does not have therefore if a dog is DD, it can not produce blue offspring. Alternately, a dog that is Dd can produce blue offspring if bred to another blue dog or blue carrier.
